Do I need travel insurance to rent a car?

In general, travel insurance is not required to rent a car. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, if you are renting a car in Europe, you may need to purchase additional insurance from the rental company. This insurance, called "CDW" or "collision damage waiver", covers damage to the rental car. It is important to note that your personal auto insurance policy may not cover damage to a rental car.
